At Kingsbury Academy our vision is to provide every pupil with the means, reasons, and opportunities to communicate, ensuring that our pupils have the best quality of life.
- Means- Pupils use many different means to communicate, using vocalisations, gestures, body language, speech and/or Alternative and Augmentative communication systems (AAC) included core vocabulary boards and communication books.
- Reasons –We support our pupils to develop a variety of language functions for example, making requests, comments, express thoughts, and feelings, ask and answer questions etc, providing endless reasons to communicate with peers and adults around them.
- Opportunities – Opportunities refer to where, when and with who we communicate. At Kingsbury Academy opportunities to develop communication and interaction skills are planned into all elements of our ‘Learning for Life’ curriculum.
Capable Environments
At Kingsbury Academy we use capable environments to support our pupils to effectively engage in learning, develop independence and improve wellbeing. Therefore, improving their quality of life.
Communication is a key feature of capable environments, providing pupils with the means, reasons, and opportunities to communicate.
Universal, Targeted and Specialist support
Our Universal Communication Expectations for each pathway create a clear focus for staff on what strategies will support the pupil’s ability to transition throughout the day, alongside the development of their expressive and receptive language and social communication skills.
At Kingsbury Academy we offer a three-tier graduated approach to support pupils’ communication and interaction needs, providing a Total Communication Environment (TCE).
Specialist Support
The Communication and Interaction Lead (SALT) at Kingsbury Academy works closely with the link NHS Speech and Language Therapists to ensure that specialist strategies and recommendations are implemented for individual pupils, working with school staff and parents.
