Kingsbury Pupils Explore Job Roles and Environmental Care at Spencer’s Retreat
This week, Spencer’s Retreat welcomed a group of enthusiastic pupils for a hands-on educational visit designed to introduce them to the responsibilities of animal care and environmental stewardship. The retreat, known for its nurturing setting and dedication to conservation, provided a unique opportunity for young learners to explore diverse job roles while fostering an appreciation for the environment.
During the visit, pupils participated in various activities, including feeding farm animals, cleaning enclosures, and learning about the daily responsibilities of caretakers. Under the guidance of staff, the children followed step-by-step instructions, such as preparing food for animals and generalising their skills taught in school to access the community.
“This visit has been a wonderful way to connect children with nature and teach them about following instructions using visual task cards,” said a staff member.
The day ended with smiles and a sense of accomplishment. Parents expressed their pride in their children for successfully regulating their emotions, accessing a coach alongside other pupils, and transitioning happily and safely. These essential skills contribute to a good quality of life and ultimately broaden the pupils' independence and cultural capital.
